Donning SCBA Tips

1. Pre-Donning Inspection (5-10 seconds)

  • Check air supply: Verify cylinder pressure is ≥ 90% full (e.g., 300 bar for a full cylinder).
  • Inspect components:

Test alarms: Activate the low-air alarm (should sound at ~25% capacity).

2. Don the Harness (15-20 seconds)

  • Grip the SCBA:
  • Swing onto back:
  • Secure straps:

4. Activate Air Supply (5 seconds)

  • Open cylinder valve fully (listen for airflow hiss).
  • Connect regulator to facepiece (audible click confirms attachment).
  • Breathe normally to confirm airflow.

5. Final Safety Check (10 seconds)

  • Verify pressure gauge (≥ 200 bar for entry).
  • Check mobility: Move head/shoulders – no restrictions.
  • Buddy check: Have a teammate inspect straps/seals.

Pro Tips for Speed & Safety

  • Practice: Regularly drill to reduce donning time to ≤ 1 minute.
  • No shortcuts: Never skip seal checks – even minor leaks can be deadly in toxic environments.
  • Emergency protocol: If alarm sounds during use, exit immediately.
