Visual Inspection:
- Check the entire SCBA unit for any visible damage, such as cracks, dents, or wear on the harness, straps, mask, and air cylinder.
- Ensure the cylinder is securely attached and the valve is fully closed.
Air Cylinder:
- Verify the air cylinder is full by checking the pressure gauge. The gauge should read within the acceptable range (usually 300bar or 4500psi or as specified by the manufacturer).
- Ensure the cylinder is within its hydrostatic test date (typically every 5 years).
Regulator and Hose:
- Inspect the regulator and hoses for cracks, leaks, or damage.
- Ensure the regulator is properly connected to the facepiece.
Facepiece:
- Check the facepiece for cracks, scratches, or damage to the lens and seal.
- Ensure the straps are in good condition and can be adjusted properly.
- Perform a positive and negative pressure check: Cover the exhalation valve and gently exhale. The mask should pressurize slightly and hold pressure without leaking.
Harness and Straps:
- Inspect the harness and straps for wear, fraying, or damage.
- Ensure all straps are properly adjusted and secure.
Air Supply:
- Open the cylinder valve slowly and listen for leaks.
- Check the low-air alarm (if equipped) by briefly pressing the bypass button or reducing the air supply. The alarm should sound when the pressure drops to a certain level (usually around 25% of capacity).
Communication System (if applicable):
- Test any communication devices integrated into the SCBA to ensure they are functioning properly.
Donning the SCBA:
- Practice donning the SCBA to ensure you can do so quickly and correctly in an emergency.
- Ensure the mask fits snugly and there are no gaps.
Final Check:
- Double-check all connections, straps, and seals.
- Confirm the pressure gauge is stable and the low-air alarm is operational.
